With Telecommunications via Space, communication Satellites in Earth orbit permitted vast communications network develop. Just a few hundred years ago communication over long distances was accomplished by beating sticks on a hollow log. When wireless communications were developed about a hundred years ago, messages could be sent over longer distances but were limited by the distance to the horizon. Long distance cables soon permitted communications between countries across the Atlantic Ocean.

Today the Soviet Union and the United States have communication satellites in low Earth orbit, elliptical orbit and geosynchronous orbit. The latter rotate around the Earth at the same speed as the Earth's rotations and appear stationary. These satellites and their corresponding ground stations provide round the clock communication to almost every place on Earth. With the coming of the Space Station and the OMV's, these satellites will be able to be serviced and redeployed without having to be returned to Earth.
