Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (1910 - 1995) was a Indian American Astrophysicist who mostly lived in the United States. He was was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1983 with William Alfred Fowler. He was the Best Indian American person where someone from India immigrated to USA. His uncle was CV Raman, the first Indian to win Nobel Prize. He worked in and lived in 2 places in America (Chicago and Williams Bay). Chandrasekhar was the one who discovered that when a star die's. the gravity pulls up. He was a lover of plants and stars. He worked in Maryland during World War II. He was the only Indian person to win Nobel Prize that was born in what's now Pakistan.


Early Life and Education[]

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was born on October 19, 1910 in Lahore, British India (now Punjab, Pakistan) to a Tamil Brahmin Family from Madras. His father Chandrasekhara Subrahmanya Ayyar was a train and railways worker. His father started in Madras and his father married his mother Sitalakshmi, They both moved to Lahore. His nobel uncle was CV Raman. He had 10 siblings with two elder sisters, Rajalakshmi and Balaparvathi, three younger brothers, Vishwanathan, Balakrishnan, and Ramanathan and four younger sisters, Sarada, Vidya, Savitri, and Sundari.

In 1916, his family left Lahore to Allahabad for 2 years until 1918, then settled in Madras, he is family is originated from. Chandrasekhar is originally from Madras, Madras Presidency, British India (present day Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India).

When Chandrasekhar was 12, he had is degree at home. When He was 15, he attended the Hindu High school in Triplicane, Madras. After his schooling in Madras, He attended the University of Madras. Then 2 years later, went to Cambridge, England.

At Cambridge University[]

In 1930, Chandrasekhar traveled to England to study. When he was 19 years old, he became famous. He met Arthur Eddington and Ralph H Fowler. He was the 2nd Indian person to win a Indian Fellowship after Srinivasa Ramanujan to go to Cambridge to study. Chandrasekhar was wanting to know the stars and planets. After his proofs, Eddington told him to go to the Royal Society in London. He also met Paul Dirac. He got a few advise from Dirac. Chandrasekhar was at Cambridge, Learning about astronomy. There in England, Chandrasekhar discoverd that when a star die's, they gravity pulls up. He also discovered that long ago, the space was filled with stars and nothing flatted. The nighttime was all white. Chandrasekhar learned about Einstein's discovery with Gravity. In 1933, Chandrasekhar passed his battlers degree's in Cambridge.
