Low Earth orbit (LEO) is a region in space located relatively close to Earth’s surface, typically at altitudes ranging from about 180 to 2,000 kilometers (112 to 1,240 miles). Satellites and spacecraft in LEO circle the Earth in orbits that take them around the planet within a few hours. Due to its proximity to Earth, LEO is commonly used for various purposes, including communication, Earth observation, weather monitoring, scientific research, and space exploration. The International Space Station (ISS) is one of the well-known examples of objects that orbit in LEO.
