A dwarf planet is a planet that had not size to be considered a planet just like earth (for example, Pluto and Ceres are two dwarf planets, one in the inner Solar System and the other is a trans-neptunian object). Pluto was reconsidered like a dwarf planet in 2006. We've discovered many dwarf planets since the earlie 90's, the tima when Hubble Space Telescope was launched. Really small planets can also be confused with some asteroids of bigger size. Dwarf planets had the same formtaion process as normal planets simply not having enough size. Most dwarf planets are located in a trans-neptunian orbit really close or in the Kuiper Belt (click to see more). Ceres is the only dwarf planet located in the inner Solar System.
