99942 Apophis is an asteroid that is discovered on June 19, 2024 by Fabrizio Bernardi at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. On December 21, 2004, Apophis passed 0.0964 AU (14.4 Koi2 Gm; 8.96 million mi) from Earth. It is a near-Earth object estimated to be about 1,100 feet across. When it was discovered in 2004, Apophis was identified as one of the most hazardous asteroids that could impact Earth.

On April 13th 2029, Apophis will come close to Earth, which it can be terrifying. But NASA has confirmed that the asteroid won't actually hit Earth, it will fly through Earth at 32,000 kilometres.
How it got its name[]
99942 Apophis name is from a demon serpent who personified evil and chaos in ancient Egyptian mythology.
